| Hamilton
Smith Dr. Hamilton Smith is a member of the
U.S. National Academy of Science and was awarded the
Nobel Prize in Medicine (1978) for the discovery of
restriction enzymes and their application to problems
of molecular genetics. Dr. Smith holds a doctorate in
medicine from the John Hopkins University, together
with numerous honorary doctorates. He was the head of
faculty at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
He is a co-founder of the Institute for Genomic Research
(TIGR), served as senior director of DNA Resources at
Celera Genomics and is currently the scientific director
of the Synthetic & Biological Energy Groups at the
J. Craig Venter Institute.

| Max Birnstiel
Dr. Max Birnstiel holds a doctorate
from the University of Zurich, together with numerous
honorable doctorates, and is a member of the U.S. National
Academy of Science. He has also contributed importantly
to European science e.g. as chairman of the EMBO Council
from 1985 to 1990, and was a founding member of the
Academia Europea. He is the founding director of the
Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP), Vienna,
Austria and previously served as a professor of molecular
biology at the University of Zurich.
